In 1975, Tom Michell, a 23-year-old science teacher, spotted an oil-drenched penguin on a beach in Uruguay. After cleaning and nursing the bird back to health, the penguin, named Juan Salvador, became Tom's unlikely companion. Juan Salvador became the school mascot, swimming coach, and confidant, inspiring Tom to write a book about their extraordinary journey.
