💨 Abstract
Since the 1980s, the "Gate to Hell" crater in Turkmenistan's desert has been burning continuously, drawing tourists and mythical narratives. Accidentally ignited by Soviet engineers exploring for natural gas, the crater has been dubbed "Hell" for its fiery appearance. Efforts to extinguish it have begun, with gas extraction efforts nearby reducing its fuel. The crater's origins remain uncertain, but its iconic flames have finally started to dwindle.
