💨 Abstract
In 1997, Dame Angela Eagle, a Labour MP, came out publicly as gay, a significant move given the era's harsh climate for LGBTQ+ individuals in the UK. She first sought advice from fellow gay MP Chris Smith and then informed her boss, Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. Despite initial anxiety, her constituency and colleagues reacted positively.
