Humphries, the defending champion, was defeated by Gian van Veen on the first night of the World Matchplay tournament. Van Veen secured a 10-8 victory over Humphries, who struggled to maintain his high standards, averaging 95.69. Van Veen, averaging 98.45, capitalized on the outer ring, making more precise shots. Humphries checked out at only 29%, whereas Van Veen was more clinically productive.
