At the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg, Jonathan Edwards, a 29-year-old British triple jumper, shattered the world record. Edwards started the season strong with several near-record jumps, peaking at 18.43m in Lille. He set a new world record of 18.16m in his first jump at the championships but surpassed himself moments later with an 18.29m
