💨 Abstract

Greek Red Cross volunteers rescued families and pets from wildfires in Vrachnaiika, western Greece. Fires, exacerbated by hot and dry conditions, destroyed vast areas, blackening the sky with ash. In Spain, a volunteer firefighter died, and several countries including Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Albania sought EU assistance. Fires also forced evacuations on Greek isles Zakynthos and Kefalonia.
