His co-writer, Ben Elton, recounted how Fry was rushed to the hospital and was minutes away from permanent brain damage. Fry has openly discussed his struggles with bipolar disorder and addiction, including his past cocaine use and how it stemmed from an addictive impulse developed in his teenage years.
