💨 Abstract

A man in Michigan died from rabies contracted through a kidney transplant from an Idaho donor. The donor, who was scratched by a skunk, had rabies transmitted by a silver-haired bat. The recipient showed symptoms five weeks post-transplant and died shortly after. Three other recipients of the donor's cornea grafts were treated and remain asymptomatic. This is the fourth known case of transplant-transmitted rabies in the U.S. since 1978.
