💨 Abstract

Marine biologists have documented a rare case of a whale shark surviving with a severe spinal deformity. First spotted in 2010 off the Louisiana coast, the 20-foot whale shark was tagged for study. Despite its deformity, the shark exhibited normal swimming patterns and feeding behaviors. Researchers believe its filter-feeding strategy, which doesn't require high-speed movement, is key to its survival. The condition is likely congenital, and the shark's movements and behaviors are remarkably normal.
