💨 Abstract

An Arabic text from a 17th-century rubbish heap in Old Dongola, Sudan, confirms the historical existence of King Qashqash, previously a semi-legendary figure akin to Britain's King Arthur. The document, written in colloquial Arabic, is the earliest evidence of Qashqash's authority during a transitional period in Sudan's pre-colonial history.
