💨 Abstract

A study by the University of Exeter warns that trawling for scampi (langoustines) in the North Sea releases ancient carbon stored in sea mud, threatening ocean ecosystems. Bottom trawling, the traditional fishing method, disturbs these carbon deposits, posing a significant environmental risk. Researchers found that the Fladen Ground, a major fishing site, holds millions of tonnes of organic carbon vulnerable to trawling.
