💨 Abstract

Scientists have discovered a new type of planet, L 98-59 d, beyond our solar system. This planet, about 1.6 times Earth's size, has a low density and an atmosphere rich in hydrogen sulphide. Unlike known planet types, it features a global magma ocean and stores vast amounts of sulphur. Observations using the James Webb Space Telescope and simulations suggest it has a molten silicate mantle and a thick hydrogen-rich atmosphere.
