💨 Abstract
Russian authorities hacked into the phone of political opponent Andrey Pivovarov using Cellebrite's technology, despite the company's claims of cutting ties with Russian government agencies. Researchers at The Citizen Lab found evidence of this hack, raising concerns about the control tech companies have over their tools once sold. The case highlights the challenges in preventing misuse of surveillance technology, even after ending sales and support. Experts suggest Cellebrite should implement remote disablement and digital watermarks to better manage misuse.
