Protesters in Ghana's capital Accra marched against unlicensed gold mining, known as "galamsey", due to its harmful impacts on health, environment, and economy. The illegal practice has increased with a 30% rise in global gold prices this year. Small-scale mines produced over 1.2 million ounces of gold in the first seven months, exceeding 2023's total.
