In 2024, solar power surpassed coal in the European Union's electricity mix for the first time, according to data from Ember. While wind power's share remained stagnant, gas-fired power production decreased. The EU aims to increase renewable power generation to reduce emissions, boost energy security, and meet its climate targets. Despite adding 13 GW of new wind capacity, unfavorable wind conditions led to lower generation.
