💨 Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is largely ineffective in curbing extreme speech on social media, especially in context-dependent cultures like India. AI systems fail to recognize derogatory phrases deeply rooted in a country's history and culture, such as culturally coded phrases and mythological references. This was revealed in a 2023 PhD thesis by professor Sahana Udupa.
