💨 Abstract

Astronomers have detected what could be the strongest signs yet of life outside our solar system in the atmosphere of an exoplanet, K2-18b, using data from the James Webb Space Telescope. They detected chemical fingerprints of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and/or dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), molecules only produced by life on Earth, although unknown chemical processes could also be the source.
