đź’¨ Abstract
Scientists studied somatic mutations in stomach lining tissue to understand cancer development. They discovered a possible new cause of stomach cancer and found evidence of trisomy, hinting at exposure to an unknown mutagen in some individuals. The findings add to a map of mutations in the gastrointestinal tract and could help understand the earliest stages of cancer development. Stomach cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide, with the highest cases in East Asia and South America.
