Despite a decade-long ban on unscientific mining by the National Green Tribunal, 1.69 lakh MT of illegally mined coal was detected in Meghalaya. This was revealed by a survey team using drone videography and volumetric assessment. The majority of the illegally mined coal was found in West Jaintia Hills, East Garo Hills, and South West Khasi Hills districts.
