The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has successfully conducted a feasibility study on using drones to transport sensitive ophthalmic bio-materials like human corneas and amniotic membrane grafts. The drone, operated in collaboration with AIIMS-Delhi and Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, covered a distance in 40 minutes that would take 2.5 hours via road, maintaining optimal conditions for specimen integrity.
