The strike was sparked by the rape and murder of a fellow medic at R G Kar hospital in Kolkata, leading to widespread protests by doctors across India. The Indian Medical Association has called for immediate attention to the striking doctors' demands, including increased police protection and investigations into corruption in medical colleges.
