💨 Abstract
The Centre has advised states to release undertrial prisoners who have served half of their maximum prison term for offences not punishable by death or life imprisonment, to reduce prison overcrowding. The ministry of home affairs has asked states to approach courts for the release of eligible prisoners under Section 479 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
