💨 Abstract

Prisons in Madhya Pradesh have a 42% excess inmate capacity, as per RTI data. As of December 2023, 43% of prisoners were from tribal and Dalit communities, and 11% were Muslim. Central jails are particularly overcrowded, housing 24,122 prisoners against a capacity of 15,176.
