In Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, officials plan to clear encroachments to excavate an ancient stepwell discovered on the eighth day of excavation. The structure, which appears to be surrounded by the well, is considered an archaeological relic and no construction is allowed on such sites. The Archaeological Survey of India is supervising the excavation, which is being done manually to avoid damage.
