Since 2014, no incidents of disability due to unsafe sewer and septic tank cleaning practices have been reported across states and Union territories in India, according to the government. However, 430 deaths occurred due to hazardous cleaning of these systems since 2019. The government has not disbursed any compensation for permanent disabilities related to such practices since 2014, as no such incidents have been reported.
