A Kolkata court sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment until death for raping and murdering an on-duty doctor at a state-run hospital. The judge rejected the demand for the death penalty, stating that the crime was not of the "rarest of the rare" category. Roy was found guilty under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
