Tarique Rahman, son of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in London, where he had legal protection to conduct political activities. Political asylum is often used by powerful nations as a strategic tool to assert their influence in international politics. Historically, countries like the U.S., U.K., France, and Saudi Arabia have provided shelter to deposed leaders, not just out of humanitarian concern, but to demonstrate their power and strategic importance.
