💨 Abstract

The British in India avoided imposing Christianity through force, instead using education to subtly promote it. They funded missionary schools hoping that Western education would undermine Hinduism and make Indians more receptive to Christianity. However, Indians mainly sought this education for material benefits and job opportunities, not religious conversion. This education also made Indians aware of their rights, leading to criticism of British rule by the 1870s.
