💨 Abstract
Francis Day, an East India Company agent, secured a piece of land near Madrasapatnam in 1639 to establish a factory and settlement, later known as Madras and now Chennai. The location was chosen for its proximity to Day's secret love and for business opportunities. The settlement served as a base for expanding trade, especially in cotton, despite not having a natural harbor.
