A study by the University of California, Berkeley, analyzed the genomes of 8,000 South Asians to understand lactose tolerance. Unlike European populations, where lactase persistence evolved due to environmental pressures, South Asians developed lactose tolerance through interaction with European pastoralists, not as an evolutionary advantage.
