💨 Abstract
Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba won the leadership contest of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Friday, becoming the party's leader and set to become Japan's next prime minister due to the LDP's parliamentary majority. Ishiba, aged 67, defeated hardline nationalist Sanae Takaichi in a run-off vote in an unpredictable election with a record nine candidates.
