đź’¨ Abstract

Mauritania’s former president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on corruption charges, up from a previous 5-year sentence. Abdel Aziz, who ruled from 2008 to 2019 and was an ally of Western powers, denies the allegations of economic crimes and abuse of power. Both the state and his defense appealed the initial sentence, leading to the harsher penalty.
