Germany's opposition leader, Friedrich Merz, has called for a sweeping overhaul of migration policy, including permanent border controls, following a deadly knife attack by an Afghan asylum seeker. Merz criticized EU migration rules and vowed to depart from the Schengen principle of free movement within the bloc. He also called for an expansion of migrant detention centers and immediate deportation of those caught by police who have been asked to leave.
