The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Nihon Hidankyo group of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima, Japan, for their work advocating against nuclear arms. Teruko Yahata, an 87-year-old survivor of the Hiroshima bombing, expressed hope and a sense of responsibility toward nuclear disarmament following the award.
