American journalist Austin Tice, a former Marine, escaped captivity in Syria in early 2013 after being held for over five months. He was spotted wandering the streets of Damascus by locals before being recaptured. Despite a massive manhunt following Assad's ouster, Tice's whereabouts remain unknown, with no clear evidence of his death.
