💨 Abstract
New Zealand saw a record number of people leaving in the 12 months to November 2024, indicating economic weakness and a move towards a technical recession. This was the highest annual outflow ever recorded, with more than half of the departing individuals being New Zealand citizens. The increase in emigration is attributed to decreasing work opportunities in New Zealand compared to Australia, where the economy is performing better.
