Romania and Bulgaria have removed land border controls, joining the European Union's Schengen zone, a free-travel area where residents can travel without passport checks at land borders. The move follows the lifting of air and sea checks in March 2024. Austria dropped its veto after assessing that additional measures were in place to curb irregular migration.
