💨 Abstract
Residents of Mogadishu, Somalia, voted in municipal elections on December 25, marking a significant step towards direct national polls after over 50 years. The last direct elections were held in 1969. Since then, indirect elections have been used to promote consensus among clans amid an Islamist insurgency. The Mogadishu vote, with 1,605 candidates for 390 posts, is seen as a test for nationwide direct elections.
