💨 Abstract

Spain's Catholic Church and the government agreed to compensate victims of clergy sexual abuse whose cases are beyond the statute of limitations or where the perpetrator has died. This follows a scandal uncovered in 2021, with estimates suggesting hundreds of thousands of victims over decades. The ombudsman will review cases and propose various forms of compensation, which must be agreed upon by both the victim and the Church. The Church has already paid around €2 million to victims.
