In a first for Sri Lanka, the presidential election on September 22 required a second round of counting as no candidate secured more than 50% of the votes. Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the National People's Power (NPP) led with 42.31% of the votes, followed by Sajith Premadasa of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) with 32.8%
