Sri Lankan leftist politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the presidential election, defeating the main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Dissanayake, popularly known as AKD, is known for his promises of tough anti-corruption measures and bigger welfare schemes.
