Five nations (Philippines, US, Australia, Japan, New Zealand) conducted joint maritime exercises in the South China Sea on Saturday, aiming to improve interoperability. China also conducted its own military drills in the disputed region. The exercises took place in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone and are intended to strengthen regional and international cooperation. The drills follow escalating tensions between the Philippines and China over disputed areas, including the Scarborough Shoal.
