💨 Abstract

India inherited a colonial, non-people centered map upon independence in 1947. The Congress, initially promising linguistic reorganization for administrative and cultural reasons, backed away due to Partition trauma, princely state integration challenges, and fear of fragmentation. The Constitution, however, allowed the Centre to redraw internal boundaries, enabling the evolution of India's internal geography in response to people's aspirations.
