💨 Abstract

As of 2025, there is renewed debate about de-dollarising the South African Rand within the BRICS+ trading bloc. This move aims to counter the dominance of the US Dollar and Euro in global trade. The proposal includes creating a new currency, the 'Unit', backed by gold and BRICS+ currencies, and administered through the New Development Bank. However, the US Dollar's overwhelming influence and President Trump's trade wars present significant challenges.
