💨 Abstract

South Africa's consumer inflation in June was primarily driven by a rise in meat prices, especially beef. This led to food inflation reaching a 15-month high of 5.1%, pushing the annual consumer price index from 2.8% to 3.0%. Supply pressures, including high feed costs and limited local production recovery after droughts, are causing beef prices to surge. This trend disproportionately affects low-income households, potentially leading consumers to switch to cheaper meat cuts or alternatives.
