đź’¨ Abstract
Researchers have found that belly fat, even in individuals with a normal BMI, may significantly increase the risk of heart failure due to hidden inflammation. A study presented at the American Heart Association’s 2026 Scientific Sessions indicated that waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio are better indicators of heart failure risk than BMI alone. This is because BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat or where fat is stored.
