The South African government is facing confusion and uncertainty regarding the SASSA SRD grant's transition to income support. President Ramaphosa announced the change for 2026, but the National Treasury had previously stated the current R370 grant would continue until March 2027. The Department of Social Development is appealing a court ruling that found SRD grant regulations unlawful. Funding the expanded grant could cost up to R400 billion, posing significant financial challenges.
