💨 Abstract

New research indicates that allowing teenagers to sleep in on weekends may lower their risk of depression. The study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, found that teens who caught up on sleep over weekends had a 41% lower risk of depressive symptoms. This is because many teens experience chronic sleep deprivation due to early school start times and other factors. While consistent sleep schedules are important, moderate weekend sleep-ins may offer some mental health benefits for teens who struggle with weekday sleep.
