South Africa's Department of Home Affairs introduced the First Safe Country principle, a significant policy shift for handling refugees and asylum seekers. This principle, outlined in a draft policy paper, states that individuals who pass through a safe country before reaching South Africa cannot claim asylum there. The policy aims to prevent South Africa from being a primary destination for asylum seekers.
