đź’¨ Abstract
The Department of Water and Sanitation in South Africa has reassured the public that traces of anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs found in drinking water do not pose an immediate health risk or cause HIV transmission. A study by North West University detected ARV residues in water sources, primarily due to inadequate municipal wastewater treatment. Key ARVs detected included lopinavir and efavirenz, with concentrations exceeding global norms in some sites.
